On August 19th at 1 p.m. on the Library Lawn at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, a fourth-year political science student decided to bring her bagpipes for an impromptu concert/protest. Her girlfriend had texted her that ‘The Preacher’ she had seen on campus over the last three years was there again, and this time she was ready.
Brice Ehmig had seen a video from Scotland of a bagpipe player protesting a hate preacher, and it just so happens she had played bagpipes since she was eleven.
Instead of being asked to leave, she was able to play her bagpipes while her girlfriend recorded what happened. A crowd formed behind her in support, who can be heard cheering and clapping loudly.
From the gaily grind:
‘I could see in his eyes and the tense veins in his face and neck that he was enraged by my presence. So after four minutes I did give him some space for a little bit,’ she adds. ‘Then he started going on more about homosexuality, and earned my relentless playing even more so. I then called over my girlfriend and gave her a big kiss right in front of the ‘preacher’ and group of people watching.’ Brice – who has been playing the bagpipes for 10 years – claims that the ‘preacher’ was condemning homosexuality by comparing it to bestiality.
